BG Bike Fittings

To get the best riding experience on any terrain you need to find your unique active riding position, which helps you climb faster, descend with confidence, and ride with less fatigue. A trained Body Geometry Specialist, who has a complete understanding of your unique biomechanics and experience, helps you find your ideal active riding position. Body Geometry is the most complete system to help you become one with your bike.

To understand you and how you ride, a Body Geometry Fit specialist asks about your goals, and measures your physical stengths and capabilities. Next, they adjust the bike to you and recommend solutions to improve comfort and enjoyment, while boosting performance an average of 5%.

The Body Geometry fit method was developed in a joint venture between Dr. Andy Pruitt, Director of the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine, and Specialized, because we felt it was the biggest opportunity to improve the riding experience for any level of cyclist. This process is scientifically proven to improve knee tracking, reduce injury, and increase power, and is the same method that is used with top professional riders in all cycling disciplines. Body Geometry starts with a rider profile interview followed by a 20-step physical assessment and then a 15-step on the bike equipment adjustment. Afterward your Body Geometry specialist will provide you with thorough documentation and schedule a follow-up session to ensure your satisfaction with your final position.

Here are some specifics on what sets our Body Geometry Fittings apart (watch the video!):

The BG FIT Process
  1. Pre-fit interview: Every fit, whether it's for a novice or experienced cyclist starts with a brief interview with our trained technician that addresses your needs, goals and injury history.

  2. Flexibility assessment: This evaluation provides an accurate picture of your flexibility and other physical attributes, including assessment of foot structure, knee position, spinal curve, shoulder extension, hip flexion and leg length, among others.

  3. Side view: This is a riding-position assessment using your side view on the bike. The goal is to find the correct neutral position that's both efficient and comfortable by adjusting the seat, handlebars, stem and cleats.

  4. Front view: Analysis from a front view to optimize hip, knee and foot alignment for optimum efficiency and balanced power delivery. This includes analysis of the pedal and shoe placement and how squarely you sit on the seat.

  5. Follow-up: After a week or so, the technician calls to discuss the effectiveness of the adjustments and to answer any other questions or concerns you may have.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bike Fits

Why get a bike fitting?

While cycling is great for your health and well being, high mileage rides, hours in the saddle, and turning the pedals over tens of thousands of revolutions means the potential for discomfort, overuse injuries, or worse: an unused bike! A proper fit helps each individual rider find their optimal blend of comfort and efficiency while on the bike. Finding that "sweet spot" in terms of fit becomes more crucial the more you demand from your body and machine, whether your goal is completing that first century ride or putting your tire on the start line at the national championships!

What is a good bike fit?

Bike fitting is best described as a blend of science and art. Some sources suggest that a mathematical formula based on certain body measurements can give you your ideal frame size and position. However, measurement-based approaches do not accurately account for less tangible factors such as flexibility or pedaling style that come into play when you pedal a bicycle. This is where the "art" of bicycle fitting comes in.

At Louisville Cyclery, we use skeletal measurements to help point you toward a new frame (or choice of frames) that meet your needs. However, this is only a starting point in finding your perfect ride. Considering your unique needs, your dynamics on the bike, even your goals and ambitions, then combining them with our expertise in bicycle materials, geometry, and componentry ensures that we will find your "sweet spot"of comfort and efficiency.

What if I already have a bike?

Not in the market for a new bike? Just need to dial in the fit of your current ride? We have several fitting packages to suit your needs. From making you more comfortable on your weekend rides to using computer-aided power measurement and pedal stroke analysis to optimize your efficiency and performance, Louisville Cyclery has a package to suit your needs!

How do I schedule a fitting?

All fittings are done Monday through Friday by appointment. Fittings can take up to two-and-a-half hours to complete, depending on your concerns and needs, so please schedule accordingly! For your fitting, we ask that you bring your usual riding ensemble: cycling shoes, shorts, and jersey or T-shirt, and of course, don't forget your bike!

If you'd like to learn more about our fittings and/or have us fit you with our Specialized Body Geometry Fit System, please contact Lane at Louisville Cyclery to schedule an appointment. We look forward to fitting you soon!
